Is 3 million Enough?

The recent boost in funding for WA’s Music industry is great but is it enough?

Jared Nelson founder and Training director at Behind the Wall says “It is great to get acknowledgement from the state government that our industry brings in money and needs support to grow but 3 million is not enough”

Mr. Nelson continues ”It is great to see artist on an individual level get support for developing their work and accessing new market but what we really need is the kind of support that sport gets from the grass roots all the way to the top”

Jared’s dream at Behind the Wall (BTW) is to create a launching pad for artists and those that want to work in the music industry by sharing the essential knowledge they need to know to make an income in the industry. The problem is that each time BTW applies for grants or has a conversation with the relevant bodies about funding they are put at the bottom of the list because the priority is artist funding and the competition is high.

Jared believes that “the key to developing the industry begins with re defining the dream. Young people all want to be rock stars but the reality is that there are only limited opportunities at the top. If we give all aspiring artists and emerging industry workers a realistic insight into the way the industry operates, how to get paid and of the potential career paths after the music career ends, we can start to build an industry that becomes synergistic.”

Now is the time for governments, educational institutions, philanthropists, record companies and everyone who works in the culture and arts to join forces and support and value what our industry does for the cultural and financial development of this great state and our nation.
