In all my years of working at concerts and live events I have seen a pattern that separates bands that look and feel professional from bands that have a lot of work to do. Below are some but not all of my tips that if followed will help make you stand out as professional from the get go. Happy giging
Have Fun – Punters enjoy watching bands that are enjoying themselves. Don’t take yourself too seriously or be hard on yourself if you make mistakes. No one knows what your songs are meant to sound like. Oh yeah and make sure you have something to say in between songs. Dead air while a guitar is being tuned is a vibe killer
Be friendly to everyone – You never know who you might be talking too or who they know so leave a good impression with every person you meet in the live music industry. It is a small industry and people talk. You would be surprised how quickly information can get from coast to coast.
Make contact with the sound engineers and lighting operators – Ideally in advance but before sound check is better than nothing. Be friendly and let them know what you need and provide as much documentation as possible to help them make you sound and look good.
Look like you sound and sound like you look – Make sure your bands appearance is consistent with how you sound. Don’t play punk rock and wear ball gowns and tuxedos you will confuse your fans and yourself.
Be early to everything – There may be such a thing as fashionably late to a party but this does not apply to a gig. You will make no friends if you are late or slow to sound check. The crew have been there a long time before you arrived so help them out by respecting the worksheet. If you get a slot at a major festival you will get your allocated time, no more no less so don’t waste it and always do what the stage manager says. It is his stage not yours.
