So you’re in a band or just love music so much that you want to make it a career? But you have no idea how you get jobs in the music industry? If this is you then I have the solution for you
I too was like you in a band and a massive music fan attending gigs every weekend with the hope that my band would make it to the big stage and my music industry dreams would come true. Well the reality is that the band ended when the lead songwriter got sick and then fell in love with a beautiful Scottish girl and moved to Scotland. The musical projects to follow got gigs and had momentum but never felt the same and hence fizzled out too.
I never gave up on working in the industry though. I figured if you can’t beat them join them so I set my sights on being a sound guy so I could get into the industry and meet all the musicians and start a new band. I contacted a local sound company AAA productions and was told it was late in the season but I could do work experience on a John Mayer concert at Belvoir amphitheatre. I was stoked, I borrowed a van drove down there for the bump in lifted some huge speakers, ran some really long cables and watched this amazing show build. I was blown away by the way everyone worked together and made everything happen in one day.
It was sound check time now and that’s when the magic happened. I was blown away by how good it sounded. I was by no means a John Mayer fan before this but I am now or at least have a huge appreciation for his music. The sound quality was one of the best I have heard to this day and I have seen a tonne of bands live.
The day was long, I left my lights on in the van and had a dead battery but I was hooked, the music industry for me. Large PA, Moving lights, Trucks full of tech gear, artists, managers and best of all a back stage pass to see the show.
From that show onwards I did everything I knew and could to find a career in the music industry. I started a music industry skills tafe course, got work at gravity games and finally got regular work with CCP who funnily enough were the lighting company at the John Mayer the previous year.
Too this day I am friends with people who were at that first gig and many others I have met along the way from the various company’s I have worked for and alongside during my amazing music industry career as a roadie.
Here I am today writing this blog and looking to share my knowledge so you too can find your music industry dream job. I have created a FREE downloadable PDF on how to find your dream job in the music industry.
